Tackle the Toad
If you enjoy trail running, this is such a fun local event with both a 20km and a 50km race that starts at Morning Mountain. I did the 20km last summer, which is actually 23km. If you are new to trail racing, the courses are rarely the actual distance advertised, so be prepared! (Find out more here about my first trail race and how I was not prepared) This event was so well organized and put on and I loved the course and the energy. Find out more here

Broken Goat
This is an event that I haven’t done yet but I look forward to doing it in the future! I have heard good things about it. It sounds like a beautiful yet challenging course with a fair amount of elevation gains in each of the distances. This event has 12km, 25km and 50km races, all which sell out quite quickly. Raven Ridge Run
This race is put on at Whitewater in association with Nelson Run Club and Friends of Pulpit Rock Society. There are both a 10km and a 15km distance. It is a really beautiful course. I did the 15km last summer and had my first dead last finish! I was dealing with IT Band issues and should not have started the race, but I am stubborn and decided to hobble myself up and down the mountain so that I could see the whole course. I will be there to cheer everyone on this year and highly recommend you check it out!

Nelson Backyard Ultra
What is a Backyard Ultra? It is a race that has no finish and goes until there is one person left who finishes a yard. A yard is a 6.7km lap, and runners have one hour to finish that yard. If they complete within the hour, they must be back at the starting mat before the next hour begins. If they do not make it back to the start or return to the mat before the next hour starts, they are disqualified. This continues until there is only one runner left, and they finish a lap to be crowned the winner. In 2024, Hugh Beedell won after completing 31 yards, which was a total distance of 207.7km!!
I went into this event without knowing what to expect, and I was just hopeful that I would get a marathon distance of 42km. It was such a fun event and I had the best day full of good conversations, laughs and meeting lots of new people in our amazing community. I felt good for most of the time I was on the course, and really shocked myself by completing 100km!! This was almost 3x my longest run prior to this event! This is the event in town that I highly recommend people attend, whether they are running or just coming to watch and support!

Run Like a Mother
Nelson’s first race of the season starts with a road run on Mother’s Day weekend. This event offers a 5km, 10km and 21km distance. Click here for more information!
